Baby Birds

I just walked into my bedroom with a basket of clean laundry on my hip. On my bed are two children, pretending to be baby birds in a nest.

Sweetling asks me, "Do you think baby birds would invite their cousins over?"

"Yes," I answer, "I think that would be a nice thing to do."

Then, "We're debating whether baby birds would go to a bird bath."

"Hmmmm," I ponder, "probably not, since they can't fly yet. They probably have to stay in the nest."

"Then how do they get baths?!?' demands Toa.

"I don't think they do," I say. "I think they don't get a bath until they are big enough to fly."

Toa's eyebrows climb up his face.

"Are you thinking you'd like to be a baby bird so that you'd never have to take a bath?"

Toa of Boy nods his head vigorously. Ah, to be a bird.
